A STRONG JAMES BOND LIFESTYLE TECHNIQUE

Reputation Plus 20 Soldiers Defeats 150,000 Soldiers

Chinese General Chuko Liang 181-234 A.D. Found himself in a city about to be attacked by an army of 150,000 under the command of General Sima Yi.  Liang only had a few soldiers with him. When he heard the enemy was approaching, he told his men to open the city gates and hide.

Liang then sat on the wall of the city playing his lute and singing.  Yi lead this his army into the gate.  But then after looking again at Liang singing on the wall, he ordered his army to retreat.

How did Liang win this victory?  It was by his reputation.  He was known as "The Sleeping Dragon", and had often used secrecy, stealth, and lies to his advantage.  General Yi knew what a sneaky S.O.B. Liang was, so he fiqured that he was walking into a trap. He immediatly called a retreat. Liang had won the victory by his reputation alone.

Reputation is very important in living the JBLS.  What is your reputation?

Once when I was to meet a new client at a hotel lobby (in the days before cell phones), he showed up late saying, "I called our contact and said 'Paul's not here.', and he said, 'You must be in the wrong place because Paul is always on time'. And I was in the wrong place."
I hadn't realized my reputation for punctuality was so strong that my friend automatically thought my client was in the wrong place.

Build your reputation and image. Then protect it.  As Jack La Laine said recently, "I can't die. It would ruin my image."

By the way, Chuko Liang is credited for inventing the wheel barrow. He needed it for moving military supplies.

  • Reputation...

Yes, having the right reputation is a necessity! Touches torch to cannon.

    Most definately!

    Sail on... sail on!!!

  • An appropriate illustration from Thunderball that impresses me:

Bond, M and someone else were looking at photographs. Bond said, "I saw this man the other day".

The other guy said, "That's impossible".

M responded with, "If Bond said that he saw him, then he saw him!" Our spy had built up a reputation with his boss.

  • Awesome.  I realized after reading your post that punctuality is something I need to work on, because it really does make a difference in the respect you receive, and ultimately your reputation.  Thanks, great post.

  • i have missed some of your latest blogs. great reading and great lessons as always!

  • I have no memory of how I fell out of touch with your site. I started writing on my blog when I was  a junior in high school - I'm going to graduate from college in one month. I found one of your comments where you told me I was a great writer - that meant a lot to a 16 year old girl.

Hope life has been treating you well.
